Exhibition

About the exhibition

SaySay.Love’s body of work includes photography, video, social activism, installation and wearable art. The artist is partially sighted in one eye, a condition from birth that prevents him from seeing in three dimensions and effects his perception of depth, speed and distance. It is a limitation that he says has added to his visual appreciation of the world and is one of the reasons he took up art as a career.

SaySay.Love spent six months photographing water across the world, from Africa to Poland, in settings varying from oceans and rivers to inside plumbing and bottles. The resulting series of images show the artist’s interpretations of the mercurial structure and beauty of water and its integral relationship to environment.

ARTIST

About The Artist

A world-wanderer, self-taught and driven by his solitary search for the perfect moment, SaySay has found ways to express his love of mother nature and her mysteries through the photographic medium. His inability to perceive depth paradoxically offers him a unique perspective on the world – a visual handicap turns into an enabling feature in his creative process and an essential instrument for the exploration of the medium.

Immensity of his intricate compositions often defies the technical confinement of a simple tool like a phone’s camera, a tool he is using more like painter would use his brush. A visual rhapsody of the elements – unbound, timeless, powerful, almost musical compositions are able to focus an attentive viewer into the groundless now.

“Being European, water shortages are outside my life-experience. Until now water has always been in abundance, something that I took for granted, an almost invisible resource, like air.” He said.   The drought changed all this and inspired the artist to embark on a journey of discovery into water itself. SaySay.Love spent six months photographing water across the world, from Africa to Poland, in settings varying from oceans and rivers to inside plumbing and bottles. The resulting series of images show the artist’s interpretations of the mercurial structure and beauty of water and its integral relationship to environment.’

“THERE IS NO MORE WATER HERE”
«Здесь больше нет воды»

Россия К – RUSSIA CULTURE TV / TV COVERAGE ABOUT THE EXHIBITION IN MOSCOW

THE MATRIX OF WATER

GUP Magazine / ARTICLE ON “THE MATRIX OF WATER” Exhibition

“The recent experience of a drought in Cape Town galvanized SaySay.Love (b. 1962) to focus his creative efforts on something that he—originally from Germany—took for granted: water. He spent the next half-year photographing water around the world, from Africa to Poland, in settings varying from oceans and rivers to inside plumbing and bottles. What followed is the series The Matrix of Water, an abstract exploration of the structure and meaning of water in its most elemental forms.

As the artist himself describes it: “Bodies of water, like photographs, contain memories, cultural and biological. Maps do not present merely a visual space, they are interactions between the existence and non-existence of water: green lush landscapes with flowing rivers, to warm-coloured dry arid terrains.”

The Matrix of Water Series will be shown in Amsterdam at Rutger Brandt Gallery 9-13 May 2018 to coincide with designer Jacques LaGrange’s collection of fashion inspired by SaySay.Love’s work to be launched at Amsterdam Fashion Week.”

BITS – The Matrix of Water

BITS – ART THE SCIENCE BLOG / ARTICLE ON THE “THE MATRIX OF WATER” EXHIBITION

‘Artist SaySay.Love captures the beauty and power of water in his latest exhibition “The Matrix of Water”‘

“For me, photography is both an intentional and a spontaneous medium. My works strive to disseminate the idea that water has a memory and forces us to look back at the past (as birth), and ahead to the idea of the waterless future as death itself. But it’s not that simple and clear cut. Water shapes history. It is a record imprinted in nature. Bodies of water, like photographs, contain memories, cultural and biological. Maps do not present merely a visual space, they are interactions between the existence and non-existence of water: Green lush landscapes with flowing rivers, to warm-coloured dry arid terrains. They allow for culture to flourish and the historical record of habitation and migration. In dendrochronology trees reveal historical imprints of water allowing us to discover the history of droughts and weather patterns. An abstract documentary of seasons in the truest sense. The existence and non-existence of water, the micro-printing in seasons, as ring patterns are translated through secular patterns. Such abstraction, visual and complex, I aim to capture in photography.” – SaySay.Love

Design Mate / Article on the exhibition in Moscow

ART AFRICA MAGAZINE, “THE ART OF ABSTRACION / SAYSAY.LOVE ON MAKING WAVES”

“Rich colours seem trapped behind a veil of darkness – visible yet unable to breach the folded contours that form out of the flowing water.  SaySay’s work may be uninhabited by traditional portraiture of structures, but run rampant with emotion and thalassic imagery.”

He unlocks familiar memories and experiences from our subconscious – time spent as a child exploring rock pools, walking with a loved one in a familiar setting, or times when you were inspired by the unlimited beauty and flow in nature. SaySay.Love’s images at once transport you into the depths of the Earth, simultaneously placing you in a distant galaxy.”

THE LUXE DIGEST/  Article on ‘The Gift Of Water” Exhibition

“In a time when Cape Town has been gripped by one of its worst drought in decades (with the prediction that the worst is yet to come), the work of South African visual artist and photographer SaySay.Love has never been more important. The drought has led to an increase in government campaigns urging citizens to conserve water, leading to a decrease in daily consumption from 1.1 billion litres as of January 2016 to 582 million litres today. In his exhibition, The Gift of Water, SaySay, who is visually impaired, aims to reshape the way Capetonians view water.”

‘THE GIFT OF WATER’ /  ART AFRICA MAGAZINE

ART AFRICA MAGAZINE,  ARTICLE ON “THE GIFT OF WATER”

“Artist to donate proceeds of sale of unique artwork valued at R1million to support youth education.”

“This unique artwork – a lightbox measuring 3 metres in width and 1.96 metres in height – displays an image of water, at once illuminating this precious liquid and enlightening the viewer to its invaluable and limited volume.

This body of work entitled THE GIFT OF WATER, captured primarily in Cape Town, is inspired by the life-force that is water. SaySay.Love’s art reshapes our understanding of this gift, and his colourful expressions reflect his understanding of preserving this life-binding agent that fills our rivers and seas. Its ebb and flow – meticulously timed with the phases and movements of the tides – bring not only new life to our shores, but refreshes our emotions and souls. Water is a gift provided by nature for the sustainability and rebirth of life. SaySay hopes his work will inspire this too.”
